Psychiatric Appraisal and Evaluation

In my line of work, I have hired many people dealing with psychiatric issues, it has become common place nowadays for functioning people with psychiatric issues to find work.

A psychiatric patient is a critical type of patient and the doctor needs some extra knowledge not only how to administer treatment but mostly how to identify the exact condition of the patient. Appraisal aids the administration of the treatment leading to partial or full recovery of the patient and hence a very important stage in the whole process. For this field of medicine, the appraisal and evaluation does not only involve the normal tests as any other health condition, rather it involves some in depth conversations and observation of the patient. As a result, the process takes different time lengths, which depend on the patient’s condition.

As a psychiatrist myself, I worked closely with a group of people that took care of senior citizens. They were actually from my home town, and provided in-home senior care. They provided to me many ideas about their own conditions and felt they could self evaluate themselves. Many people think they know themselves well, but, after working closely with a psychiatrist, another professional person may find out some stuff about you that you are not aware of. Which was the case for many people on this staff that had some sort of easily diagnosable disorders they displayed. Most of them actually were not surprised at all to hear the diagnosis, but never considered themselves to have those symptoms until they were brought to their attention.

The evaluation starts with noting the exhibiting issues of the patient. This totally depends on the doctor’s judgment. It involves noting the symptoms and visible behavioral traits of the patients that are significant and can lead to some known psychiatric condition. It is normally not a default process of order, but the doctor applies his/her expertise to test and alternate the various probabilities as they put together data about the patient. However, a set framework for psychiatric evaluation and appraisal is used, that is:

  • Comprehending the patient’s condition and effects as understood by the patient.
  • Comprehending the patient’s condition and effects as per the relatives or friends.
  • Analyze the patient’s current health state relative to his/her health history.
  • Find out about the patient’s past use of medicine if any.
  • Comprehend the patient’s family psychiatric history.

As for the patient’s psychiatric history, it is taken through a series of examination of the mental and physical state of the patient and some of the immediate relatives. This helps to show the relationship and the hereditary traits in the family, easing the work of the doctor in getting to the real condition of the patient.

After the whole appraisal or rather the check is complete, the results are discussed with the patient on the go and after the examination and also with a relative or other person that brought the patient for the evaluation. It is advisable that the psychiatrist maintains an open mind through the appraisal and evaluation as this the most critical part of the whole treatment and management of psychiatric conditions. If assessed wrongly, then wrong treatment will be administered which can be fatal and catastrophic to the health of the patient as the human head and brain is very critical.
